Horse-powered connection — gentle, joyful, meaningful.
Can a horse want to pull a carriage? Should they?
At Wildes Wir, we believe in a life free from exploitation — for all species.
That means no products, practices, or expectations that rely on suffering or killing. And yet, we’ve also learned through decades of horse experience: many horses truly enjoy spending time with humans — when they have choice, when they’re respected, and when their bodies are supported by good, thoughtful movement.
Pulling a carriage, done right, can be exactly that.
It can strengthen muscles, improve balance, and bring joy — to horses and humans alike.
We specialize in gentle, fear-free driving education for people and ponies. Please note: we currently take in ponies for a few weeks to give them an education in carriage-driving — especially those looking for a new, meaningful task after their child-riding years.
If you're already experienced with horses and want to explore this beautiful tradition in a new, ethical light, we’d love to welcome you. For beginners, we recommend starting with groundwork and attuning themselves to the horse’s subtle forms of expression before jumping into the world of driving.
What We Stand For
No force. No fear. No shortcuts.
Training, not pressure.
Fun and movement with meaning.
Respect for every horse, no matter size, age, or background.
Our motto:
“Drive with kindness. Train with care.”
Equine Language & Groundwork
Tuning into a horse’s feelings and body language is the heart of every gentle connection — whether they’re carrying a rider, pulling a cart, or simply sharing the day with us. Groundwork is where trust begins: it keeps everyone safe and lays the foundation for kind, healthy, and respectful training.
That’s why we never use blinkers when driving. The horse’s eyes are windows to their soul — and to truly listen, we need full sight and presence.
When humans and horses come together, understanding is everything. From a horse’s view, our ways can seem puzzling or strange. For too long, training focused on teaching “commands” and expecting fixed behaviors. We choose another path: by watching how horses talk to each other — and to us — we learn their language and gently translate it for our very different bodies.
Our courses in horse communication, groundwork, and lunging happen in small, mindful groups — or as one-on-one sessions right where you are.
Why we love small ponies
Welsh A, Shettys, Classics — small ponies are often bought for children, then sadly passed around or forgotten once the kids grow. But these smart, sturdy souls can live 30+ years and deserve so much more than standing around on too much grass.
We offer them a new role. A dignified one.
Through kind, step-by-step training, these ponies can become driving companions for the whole family. With sulkies or lightweight gigs, parents can join children on forest paths, and even a trot or controlled canter becomes an adventure for all. It’s more affordable than many expect, and above all: it’s a second chapter full of purpose and joy for the pony.
How We Train
We follow the German Driving System, with respect for traditional knowledge and modern insights:
-
Trust and communication begin on the ground. Before a horse ever pulls a cart, they learn how to move with a human beside them — calmly, confidently, and without pressure.
-
We build understanding step by step: helping horses feel their own bodies, respond to subtle cues, and gradually experience the feel of pulling in a safe, controlled way.
-
Just like humans, horses need time to strengthen their bodies. Our approach focuses on slow, thoughtful conditioning — protecting joints, backs, and minds.
-
A tense lip, a flinch, a tightened tail — horses speak volumes. We teach you to listen with your eyes and heart, so you can spot discomfort early and respond with care.
-
You’re not a bystander. We guide you hands-on — or reins-on — and offer driving simulator sessions to build confidence before stepping into real-life situations.
